てんがい【天外】

〔宇宙のそと〕 beyond the heavens; 〔きわめて遠い所〕 the farthest regions.

●魂天外に飛ぶ be transported to the seventh heaven; be in ecstasy [raptures].

奇想天外 ⇒きそうてんがい.

てんがい【天涯】

1 〔空のはて〕 the horizon; the skyline; the heavenly shores; 〔きわめて遠い所〕 a far-off [distant, remote] land [region].

2 〔(「天涯の」の形で) 広い世の中〕 the (wide, wide) world.

●天涯の孤児 a solitary orphan.

●今や天涯孤独の身だ. Now I am all alone in this wide, wide world.

てんがい【天蓋】

1 〔仏像･棺などの上にかざす絹がさ〕 a canopy; a baldachin(o) [baldaquin]; a ciborium 《pl. -ria》.

●天蓋でおおう canopy; overcanopy; cover with a canopy [baldachin(o), baldaquin, ciborium].

2 〔虚無(_こむ)僧の深編みがさ〕 a basket of woven rush worn by mendicant Zen monks so as to cover the head and face completely.
